With the increasing market for electrified vehicles (EVs), the demand for onboard chargers (OBCs) is growing fast. OBCs open up the possibility to charge the car at fast-charging DC stations and with AC sources in a reasonable time. Such systems are currently going up to 22 kW with operating voltages up to 800 V.

The basic idea of electrolytic capacitor types is to maximize the surface area of electrodes and thus increase their capacitance value and capacitance density. Fine pores and cavities created on the electrode (anode) surface are then covered by a dielectric – usually insulator/semiconducting metal oxides. The electrolyte in a liquid/wet, gel or solid form is used as a medium to contact the high surface from the second side and bring it by its electrical conductivity mechanisms to the second electrode (cathode).

The chemically reactive nature of the materials used in aluminum capacitors is problematic on two points: the dielectric layer’s stability and the device’s long-term mechanical integrity. Since the aluminum oxide dielectric layer in these devices is formed through an electrochemical process, it can also be eroded by an electrochemical process simply by reversing the applied voltage. This is why most aluminum capacitors are polarized; the application of voltage with the wrong polarity causes rapid erosion & thinning of the dielectric, resulting in high leakage current and excessive internal heating.

Ceramic capacitors are leading miniaturization, downsizing and dominating the market share. The right charts are based on sales VALUE, but if we have these charts in sales VOLUME ceramic capacitors would occupy up to 80% of market share of all capacitors made, on the other hand more expensive tantalum capacitors would shrink its share in volume terms.

These electrolytic capacitors have high instability and poor tolerances, and their performance deteriorates when they are subjected to high leakage current or high temperatures. Plastic film and paper capacitors are usually used in circuits that demand capacitors with good aging performance, high stability, and high current-carrying capability. For high-frequency applications, ceramic capacitors are a good option. However, these capacitors have poor aging performance.
