Custom setups for testing Strain Gages in extreme temperature and vacuum conditions
The main challenge for the testing for a wide temperature and vacuum it to have the capability of controlling the temperature of the sample while the strain/force tests were being applied.
This case describes how ALTER has done this to allow testing Strain Gages from -190ºC to more than 200ºC. The use of Strain Gages in space leads to the necessity of testing them in thermal vacuum conditions. A description of the setup developed by ALTER to do a life test with periodic application of strain in vacuum at a controllable temperature is also described.

Juan Barbero obtained his MSc in Physics at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid. Currently in 1991. He is responsible for the commercial activities of the Optoelectronic laboratory Area at ALTER TECHNOLOGY. He has gathered a large experience in analysis, testing, and verification of aerospace applications for more than 25 years. He has also been involved in the technical managing of several photonic-orientated projects for the aerospace sector, ensuring its technical execution and coordinating the consortium members' activities (Companies, OPIS, etc...).
Juan Barbero is also part of the ESA Photonic Working Group, providing inputs and support regarding new photonics technologies proposed for space application.
